US manufacturer magniX last night launched a new range of electric engines designed specifically for helicopters.

The HeliStorm engine is designed for light single-engined helicopters or hybrid powertrains and delivers a peak power of 330 kW.

magniX, which also developed electric engines for Cessna Caravans, has been testing the HeliStorm in collaboration with Robinson Helicopters, with installations in two R44s.

“The helicopter market represents a tremendous opportunity for magniX, as the strengths of our technology align well with the market need,” said Reed Macdonald, CEO of magniX.

“magniX’s HeliStorm engines expand upon our existing world leading capabilities and deliver a step change in performance, reliability, and value for our customers. We look forward to bringing our innovative technology to another segment of the aviation industry.”

The Helistorm operates at 6000-700 RPM and weighs 75 kg, but needs to be linked to a source of electric power such as magniX's Samson battery or other power cell.

Robinson Helicopter CEO David Smith said his company was committed to developing helicopters with sustainable powertrains.

“magniX has a proven track record when it comes to powering our R44 with their electric motors,” he said. “Robinson is supportive of magniX’s HeliStorm electric engine range and we look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to deliver market leading sustainable helicopters.”

In August last year, Robinson announced a collaboration with Canadian company Unither Bioelectrics to develop zero-emissions helicopters based on the R44 and R66 platforms.
