The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) will reduce the processing fee for Class 2 medicals when it introduces changes to the AVMED system tomorrow.

Applicants for Class 2 medicals will now be charged $65 for CASA to process their medical, down slightly from the previous $75 fee.

The change comes as CASA delegates the power to issue Class 2 medicals to all Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAME), without referring to the AVMED department. Previously, only those examiners designated as a DAME2 could do that.

Under the new changes, DAMEs can still refer cases to CASA if they wish, but must do so when the diagnosis is psychosis, irreversible dementia or epilepsy, or if the person has had a Class 2 refused previously.

The processing fee will apply regardless of whether or not the DAME refers the application to CASA.
