One of the United States' largest air shows, Pacific Airshow, today announced they would hold an Australian version over Gold Coast beach in August next year.
Pacific Airshow is held at Huntington Beach, California, annually and claims host three million people across the three day show.
"There has never been an air event of this scale staged anywhere in Australia," said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate. "That’s why the Gold Coast is famous for fun – in the air and on the ground.
“This event underscores our commitment to attracting the very best in global entertainment for our residents, visitors and businesses.”
Event organisers Code Four revealed plans for Pacific Airshow Gold Coast on a rain-sodden Gold Coast beach this morning, which includes both civil and military displays, with involvement also from the urban mobility sector.
“This will be an annual event that will feature the finest aerobatic teams and performers from around the globe as well as inspiring educational STEM activities, music, entertainment and much more,” said Code Four CEO Kevin Elliot.
“The economic impact of this event will be tremendous and well timed given Gold Coast’s recovery from covid and should reinforce that the destination is open for business.
"I would expect to see a major increase in theme park attendance on Airshow weekend, as an example."
Major Events Gold Coast CEO Jan McCormick said securing the Pacific Airshow was a "game changer" for the Gold Coast.
“This exciting five-year partnership well and truly cements our city's reputation as a world-class events destination that has the capacity to host the biggest shows on the planet," said McCormick.
“The economic impact of hosting an event of this size is also substantial and will deliver a significant boost not just for businesses in Surfers Paradise but for hotels, restaurants, retail, and the event industry supply chain right across the city and the greater Southeast Queensland region.”
Pacific Airshow in California is thought to be the largest air show in the USA, featuring international flying displays including the RAF Red Arrows, Canadian Snowbirds and the best civilian aerobatic pilots from around the world.
Australian air racer and aerobatic display pilot Matt Hall has been signed as the Pacific Airshow Gold Coast's first ambassador.
