Airservices Australia will start decommissioning navaids all over Australia from 26 May 2016.

The move is part of the transition to Global Navigation Satellite Service (GNSS) as the primary form of IFR navigation.

Over 170 Airservices-owned NDBs, VORs and DMEs will be shut down, leaving only a skeleton back-up network in place.

GNSS has been mandatory in IFR aircraft since 4 February this year.

Removing the navaids is expected to save Airservices thousands of dollars each year in maintenance costs.
