The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has established a new broadcast area in northern NSW beginning on 2 December.

Stretching from Stotts Island south to Byron Bay and inland as far as Kunchur on the Tweed River and east to a direct line between Cape Byron and Cudgen Headland, the broadcast area requires aircraft flying within it to broadcast on 127.55.

Vertically, in runs from the surface to the base of the Gold Coast CTA steps.

According to CASA, the move has been made because of frequency congestion on Multicom 126.7.

"The change affects the airfields of Murwillumbah, Tyagarah, Nobbys Creek and the Gold Coast flying training areas (including D656A-D)," CASA stated in an annoucement released today.

"This new area aims to reduce frequency congestion by removing aerodromes from the Multicom frequency, 126.7MHz. The change also removes the uncertainty of which frequency an aircraft should be monitoring when transiting the area."

More information on the new broadcast area is available on the 2 December Gold Coast VTC and AIP.
