EAA AirVenture, held at Oshkosh in the USA last week, attracted approximately 686,000 visitors, setting a new attendance record.
The previous record of 677,000 was set only last year at a time when the world-wide aviation community was still recovering from the pandemic-induced downturn.
Jack Pelton, president of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), said the result took the event to a higher plane.
“Over the past decade, and especially since 2020, we have seen AirVenture move to another level, as we maintain the heart of the event and while adding programs and activities that appeal to aviation enthusiasts of all interests," he said.
"Kudos to our dedicated volunteers and staff who plan and adjust to make it work.”
Of those visitors, more than 2500 registered as having come from outside the USA, although the EAA believes that number is much higher because many don't register.
According to the EAA, more than 10,000 aircraft flew into the event, either at Wittman Regional Airport or other airports surrounding Oshkosh. That equates to 113 take-offs and landings per hour whilst the tower is open.
Figures also revealed 2846 show aircraft, 15,000 camping sites, 861 commercial exhibitors and 836 media representatives, all watched over by nearly 6000 volunteers.
The results have pleased Pelton, who said the EAA was already working on the 2025 event.
"We’ve already received plenty of ideas for next year and a little bit later this summer, we’ll begin reviewing what might be possible for 2025," he said.
"Our annual goal is to create a gathering of people and airplanes that is found nowhere else in the world, and continue to improve the experience for EAA members and visitors.”
