Responses from the recent Australian Flying Reader Survey indicate that the magazine is providing excellent material for the readership, with very few calls for change.

Launched on 17 January, the survey asked readers five questions about the material that appears in the print magazine and gave the opportunity for written feedback. These are the results of the survey.

  • 78% said the Airmail section was critical because space was needed for people to air their opinions
  • 65% said the News section was good as it is; 15% wanted more news
  • 58% liked the Flight Test articles as they are, but 14% said they wanted to know less about the technical aspects of the aeroplane and 12% thought the writers favoured the aeroplane too much

The spread of article types is very evenly favoured, with What Can We Learn proving most popular and Rotors the least popular. In a boost for the regulator, CASA's Safety Matters proved third most popular, just behind second-placed Editorial. Rankings are:

  1. What Can We Learn
  2. Editorial
  3. Safety Matters
  4. Destinations
  5. The Kernels of Wheatie
  6. Short Final
  7. Down to Business
  8. Good Sports
  9. Rotors

Good feedback also came in the form of the written comments section, with 49 people taking the opportunity to tell Australian Flying what they think in their own words. In summary, readers said they would like:

  • More in-depth articles with comparative reviews of GA and recreational articles
  • More articles on potential careers for pilots
  • More articles around aero clubs and small flying schools
  • More of Jim Davis, both accidents and his Lessons from a Logbook series
  • Less negative comments about CASA
  • More negative comments about CASA
  • Greater presence at flying events around Australia
  • Maybe some articles on aviation history
  • Stay away from articles on aviation history
  • More Destinations
  • Greater diversity in locations the articles are sourced from
  • Subscribers should get their magazine first before the newsagents

Australian Flying editor Steve Hitchen has said he welcomed all feedback and will respond to each of the comments made above next week.
