A safety pledge for pilots and operators launched at Avalon is gaining momentum as signatures continue to build.

CASA's Aviation Safety Pledge has attracted over 250 signatures since it was launched only a month ago.

CASA Executive Manager Stakeholder Engagement Andreas Marcelja described the response as a "strong start" and emphasised the reasoning behind creating the pledge.

"The heart of our pilot safety message is that safety is a shared responsibility," he told Australian Flying. "We want to encourage a culture where we normalise talking about safety, share our stories and recognise that there is always something new to learn."

The two pledges–My Safety is in My Hands for pilots and Their Safety is in Our Hands for operators–commit people to acting for aviation safety in seven ways:

  • prioritising pre-flight preparation
  • adhering to flight regulations
  • continuously improving skills and knowledge
  • respecting skies and peers
  • speaking up for safety
  • staying alert and focused
  • fostering a culture of safety and continuous learning.

Names of individuals and organisations that sign the pledges are published on the CASA website, with high-profile operators like the Royal Flying Doctor Service, RMIT University, Sharp Airlines, Pilatus Australia, Flight Standards and Trent Robinson Aviation already getting on board.

CASA will also release a third pledge for engineers next month as part of their May-tenance month activities.
