The Australian Transport Safety Board (ATSB) has today launched a new initiative on their website aimed at highlighting broad safety concerns.
Safety Watch highlights high risk areas that the ATSB has identified from examining accident and incident investigations. It includes two areas of interest for general aviation: GA pilots and non-towered aerodromes.
The GA pilot section identifies four areas of concerned that the ATSB wants pilots to give more attention to, being:
- flying lower than necessary
- experiencing reduced visibility
- not being aware that the engine fuel supply is not working
- not recognising the implications of something going wrong.
Safety Watch also provides guidance on how pilots can deal with these situations as they arise.
The non-towered aerodrome section provides general advice on flying safety around CTAFs or airports where the tower is closed. It emphasises the use of radio and the importance of see-and-avoid principles.
Safety Watch can be found on the ATSB website here.
