Airservices Australia has commissioned two new en route radars at Tabletop near Townsville and Mount Alma near Rockhampton.
Both are secondary surveillance radars that display information generated from transponders in aircraft, and are integrated with the existing ATC radars to provide continuous coverage out to 250 nm from the site.
According to Airservices Executive General Manager Mark Rodwell, the radars were replaced with new systems to increase safety in those areas.
"The radars are used to provide real time aircraft position information to air traffic controllers for the safe monitoring and separation of air traffic operating in far North Queensland.
"Safety is our number one priority and the replacement of these radars offers increased reliability, and by providing additional information to air traffic controllers, will delivery greater accuracy and improved tracking of aircraft."
The en route radars are also a back-up to the ADS-B system.
Airservices has replaced six of nine radars in the replacement program, with Mount Macedon to be done before the end of this year and Hann Tableland near Cairns and Swampy Ridge in Mackay to be replaced in 2016.
