A photo exhibition planned at Essendon Airport will trace the history of Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine.
Called "The History of Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) 1920-2020", the exhibition will be unveiled at the Civil Aviation Historical Society's (CAHS) Airways Museum on 9 November.
Photographs on display will chart the history of Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine, and are drawn from the CAHS collection, the Melbourne Airport collection and several private collections.
Unknown to many, there has been aviation activity at the present airport site since the 1920s: the first plans for a major airport at Tullamarine were drawn up in the 1940s. Construction of the present airport, necessary to accommodate a new generation of jet airliners on a site unencumbered by surrounding housing development, began in the early 1960s and the airport opened in 1970.
The Airways Museum is located at Essendon Airport on the corner of Wirraway Road and Shaw Court.
