Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus) will make a submission to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for a increase to the maximum take-off weight it administers.

Currently, only aircraft with a MTOW of 600 kg or less can be registered and administered through RAAus. It is thought the new limit to be sought will be at least 750 kg.

When asked by Australian Flying, RAAus Chief Executive Michael Linke confirmed an approach to CASA had been made.

"RAAus is exploring options with the regulator to increase the base limit of aircraft above the current 600kg limit," he said. "As progress is made members will be kept informed."

If RAAus is successful in getting an increase to 750 kg, some two-seat aircraft currently on the Australian Civil Register could be transferred to the RAAus register, including some models of Victa Airtourer, Grumman AA1, Cessna 150, Piper PA-22-108 Colt and Van's RV-6.

Some antique two-seaters like Taylorcraft, Luscombe Silvaire and Cessna 140 could be transferred over also.

Should CASA grant a higher weight limit, the number of types that would become eligible for RAAus registration would increase significantly.
