An innovative and novel idea was the Fairchild XC-120 Packplane. Looking very much like a proof-of-concept for Thunderbird 2, the XC-120 was an experiment in modular freight. The aircraft was developed from the C-119 Boxcar, but, only one prototype was ever built and the project was scrapped in 1952. It is a shame all the optimism of the voice over on this video came to nothing.
