Australian Flying September-October 2023 is so much more than just another issue; this is the 60th anniversary of Australian Flying, and we've produced a Collectors' Edition to celebrate. Jam-packed with great entertainment and information on the worlds of general, sport and recreational aviation, this is a special issue that mixes the old with the new, presenting retrospectives melded with perspectives of the future. You'll recognise it easily by it's gold masthead and an evocative image of a Beech 23 Musketeer, which pays homage to the very first issue of Australian Flying released in February 1963.
Here's what you can expect.
Exploring the Back Issues
We look back over 60 years of Australian Flying and have a look at some the issues the magazine covered in the 1960s. Are they still relevant today? The experts give their opinions.
Back on the Beech
The very first flight test in Australian Flying was the then new Beech 23 Musketeer. Tony Self checks out what our 1963 reviewer thought of the Baby Beech and uses hindsight to test the accuracy of the conclusions.
Advancing Technology
Technology has changed aviation significantly over the past 60 years. With advances in construction materials, avionics, navigation and surveillance altering the GA landscape, a pilot from 1963 would be excused for thinking they’d found another world. Andrew Andersen reports.
Staying in Control
Controlled airspace still presents challenges to many GA pilots, who would rather go around than request a clearance to go through. Owen Zupp believes CTA is not as hard as you think, and offer tips to smooth your passage through the zone.
Right Seat Rules
Jim Davis points out to flying instructors that the easiest way to embed learning in a student is to make the lesson memorable with passion and emotion.
The Specials Board
Shelley Ross filters through 20 years of outback flying experience to list her top 10 destinations worthy of a visit on your next safari.
Freedom is in the Air
With the Pacific Airshow Gold Coast only days away now, Tony Self visited the Freedom Formation team at a camp in Cowra to see what it takes to work up a world-class formation and aerobatics display.
And all the regulars: Editorial, News, Rotors, Products, A Spot of Recreation, Safety Matters, Down to Business, What Can We Learn?, Kreisha of Habit and Short Final.
This could be the ultimate collector's edition, so make sure it's in your collection today.
