Deputy Secretary of the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development Shane Carmody has been appointed as the Acting CEO and Director of Aviation Safety at CASA in the wake of the impending departure of Mark Skidmore.
Carmody was with CASA previously between October 2006 and June 2009 as Deputy CEO.
In announcing the news today, CASA Chairman Jeff Boyd said Carmody's experience would hold the regulator in good stead.
"Mr Carmody brings a wealth of aviation experience and knowledge to the role and will provide the appropriate leadership and stability as CASA continues to deliver the organisational transformation program,” Boyd said.
“Mr Carmody joins CASA at a time when the organisation has undergone a period of significant change with the major restructure of the organisation and a renewed focus on stakeholder engagement and collaboration to deliver improved aviation safety outcomes.
“A number of improvements including the development and implementation of CASA’s new regulatory philosophy and just culture throughout the organisation will continue to be delivered.”
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said that Carmody would not simply be a place-holder CEO, but would be expected to continue on reform work.
"Mr Carmody brings a wealth of experience not only in Government but also at CASA where he previously worked in senior management," he told Australian Flying, "and his leadership skills will ensure a smooth transition whilst CASA begins their search for the new CEO/Director.
"Mr Carmody will ensure CASA continues to work on implementing the government recommendations from the Aviation Safety Regulations Review (ASRR), which I expect to be completed by the end of this year."
