Michigan-based Waco Aircraft is to introduce an amphibious version of its iconic YMF-5D biplane.
The YMF-5F is fitted with Aerocet 3400 amphibious floats and powered by a seaplane version of the 300-hp Jacobs R-755 radial engine.
According to the company, the "F" designation was chosen for "floats", "fun" and "flying."
The amphibious version has a maximum take-off weight of 1459 kg compared with the 1338 kg of the landplane, but the useful load is down by 56 kilos. The extra drag on the floats is also expected to reduce the cruise speed by 10 knots to 94 KTAS.
Waco is still in the process of certifying the YMF-5F, which won't permit aerobatics. The YMF-5F is expected to sell for around $US600,000.
