Cub Aircraft Australia, the newly appointed Australian CubCrafters distributor, is open for business.

Founded by Victorian pilot Stephen Buckle, Cub Aircraft Australia has just put the finishing touches on a new hangar at Tyabb Airport outside of Melbourne, where the CubCrafters Certified Sales Center will operate from.

Buckle’s interest in CubCrafters aircraft was piqued after flying a friend’s Sport Cub in South Australia, followed by a visit to CubCrafters HQ in September last year.

Cub Aircraft Australia will import aircraft from Washington-based CubCrafters, a company that mines the storied history of classic taildragger aviation to build a range of three modern light sport aircraft – the Sport Cub, Carbon Cub, and the Top Cub.

Buckle recently received two new Carbon Cubs, one of which will be used as a demonstrator. While there are currently only four CubCrafters aircraft in Australia, Buckle says that even in these early days interest in the Carbon Cub has been high.

“People commonly express disbelief that such a powerful airplane qualifies for the Light Sport category,” Buckle said of the Carbon Cub, which is powered by a 180hp engine and claims to be the largest LSA on the market.

“In Australia we don’t really have a history with Cubs in any big way. There are some old Cubs here, but not many. The Carbon Cub is unique – it’s great fun and puts a smile on your face.”
