CASA has set itself three major goals to be achieved over the next three years.
The targets, outlined in the latest CASA Corporate Plan, are:
- Comprehensive, consistent and effective regulation to enhance safety
- Good governance and continuous improvement of organisational efficiency
- Effective and appropriate relationships within the aviation community
In the latest CASA newsletter, Director of Aviation Safety John McCormick said:"These goals ... will underpin all our activities and the positive changes we are making to achieve higher levels of aviation safety.
"In practical terms there will be a range of activities undertaken to make sure we meet our three goals."
The Corporate Plan also identifies seven challenges that CASA says it will need to develop responses to in order to maintain or enhance safety. The challenges are:
- The growth of low-cost carriers
- Substantial growth in air traffic
- Technology innovation
- Increase in home-built aircraft
- Ageing aircraft
- A shortage of safety-critical personnel
- Implementing new regulations
In his forward to the Corporate Plan, McCormick acknowledges that CASA will be under pressure if they are to meet these challenges.
"We have a number of demanding challenges facing us as an organisation over the period covered in this Plan. To meet these challenges and deliver optimal aviation safety outcomes for all Australians we will need to work together as a cohesive and motivated team.
"Like other regulators, CASA must cope with the dynamics and pressures of industry, and the influence of the international and national economic environment.
"By acknowledging these internal and external pressures, the work covered in this Plan will place CASA in the best position to improve key performance standards associated with the regulation of aviation safety."
