The former Australian Sport Aviation Confederation has changed its name to fall in line with international convention.
The new name Air Sport Australia Confederation (ASAC) was adopted to remove confusion between sport aviation and air sports as defined by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI).
ASAC member organisations include the Australian Aerobatic Club (AAC), the Australian Parachute Federation (AFP), the Australian Ballooning Federation (ABF), the Hang Gliding Federation of Australia (HGFA), the Gliding Federation of Australia (GFA) and the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia (MAAA). It represents over 200,000 participants.
ASAC is the single national representative organisation to the FAI which is the world governing body for all aviation sporting events and records. Over 100 countries and some 2 million participants worldwide are covered by the FAI, and the air sports include parachuting, gliding, hang gliding, microlights, paragliding, ballooning, aerobatics, model aviation, rotorcraft and astronautics.
The confederation should not be confused with the Sport Aircraft Association of Australia (SAAA).
